The older I get, the more I realize so many people in this world, especially Americans are merely surviving from day to day. They have no sense of purpose and are just muddling through life. Maybe they don’t realize there’s anything else out there or perhaps they’re simply following in the footsteps of their parents.
Now please understand, I am a firm believer in doing what is necessary (legally, of course), to make ends meet. I certainly don’t advocate sitting around, living off the government while waiting for the perfect opportunity to come knocking. We all should be willing to work hard and provide for our families. However, there are a lot of talented people I know who work their butts off everyday, only to draw a check. They have very little love and respect for the company in which they work. It’s just a job to them – a means to a survival-based end. I’ve been in this place myself, so I know how miserable this situation is.
So, what’s the key to living a life that’s full of purpose and meaning? I believe there are a few things that can radically change our perspective on this and help us find purpose and meaning in life.
1. A Relationship With God
I am not using this space as an opportunity to promote my faith, but I will take this opportunity to promote my God. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that without a relationship with God though Jesus Christ, I would be without any sense of purpose in this life. I would have no hope for now or eternity. He alone can give us true meaning, direction and perspective in this world. If you want to know more about how to really know God, ask me. I will show you how.
2. Overcome Fear and Take Risks
As I look back on my life, I noticed every time I’ve pursued something that I’m passionate about, there was always a risk involved. I believe this is always the case. Lets be real, we don’t take many risks in life because we’re afraid of one thing – failure. We’re often afraid to risk our finances, our reputation, etc. Can you relate? There’s only one way to overcome your fear and take action. You just have to go for it. I know that doesn’t sound very profound, but it’s the truth. If you know in your heart that what you want to pursue is something worthwhile, then just do it. Seriously, tomorrow will come whether you take action or not. I promise you that you’ll feel better knowing you tried and didn’t succeed rather than not having tried at all are left wondering what could have been. The great thing about taking risks is, once you do and experience success, you’ll want to take greater risks. It gets easier. It’s like jumping off a high diving board for the first time. It’s scary and intimidating, but after that first dive, it’s a piece of cake.
3. Care About the Success of Others
If we only care about our own needs and disregard the needs and aspirations of others, it is possible follow our passions, but we won’t be happy. Some people will disagree with me on this, but that’s ok. I know this to be true. Making money or having things doesn’t even come close to the feeling of knowing we’ve made a difference in someone’s life. I believe this is something God built into every person. That’s why the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:20 said he “still lacking”. Money and things didn’t cut if for him – he knew there’s was more. Money is so powerful because it’s required in life, but don’t think for a minute that it will make you happy. My point is, when following your passions, make it your priority to help others fulfill their dreams and passions too. Then you will feel good about your own success.
There are so many other keys, but I truly believe these are the most important. If you have unfulfilled dreams and are just trying to survive, I hope this post helps motivate you to take action. Thanks for reading :).
